DC International School + LAMB PCS

Washington, DC

DC International School (DCI) and one of its feeder schools, Latin American Montessori Bilingual (LAMB), have a new home in the historic Delano Hall at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center at 16th and Aspen Streets, NW. As the first completed project of the ambitious Parks at Walter Reed Development, DCI/LAMB at Delano Hall is an adaptive re-use project transforming a former nurses’ dormitory into a 180,000sf school for two international language immersion programs.

The design of the addition along the west edge of the building and campus completes what was an intended wing expansion to the 1930 building. With a more contemporary approach, the building compliments the existing structure while announcing itself as a 21st Century add to the historic building, framing the new athletic field that is central to the open campus.

EMBRACING A GLOBAL OUTLOOK

The study of world languages and cultures is the cornerstone of DCI's program and is celebrated throughout each aspect of the school. Each program area, including learning commons, gardening, arts, and music, was designed to support bilingual study and embrace a variety of cultural ideas and values.

The contemporary addition responds to the historic building proportions and features and provides an enlarged wing for athletics, science, and the arts.
